Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her were hopeful that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by making her perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor and plan to eventually transport her to the open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast in which she could reside for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals who bond with family members until they die. Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been criticised for the quality of food that they provide to killer whales. The 57-year old orca was taken from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. Although the species is in danger, she lives in a tank which some believe is too small.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is unquestionable However, her health continues to deteriorate. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare organizations who wish to see her returned into the wild. Lolita is a resident at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970 and has been a major tourist attraction for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and a debilitating illness that has left her in a fragile condition.

The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is aging rapidly and that her health is declining.

As her captor does not need to reveal this information, it is unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the death of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita Many people believe that she could be closer than ever before to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to moving the whale out of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. These plans were too late to save the whale that passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
